I AM SAFE PROJECT
PE UNIT THAT SAVE LIVES
For many children school is where they feel safe and protected. Their reality outside school is of a world that is less secure and sometimes even violent.
My mission is to teach children how to defend themselves and to stay alive when attacked. My objective is to make sure that even in a very brutal situation on the street or at home they will be able to survive by using the right strategy, mindset, tools and techniques. Not only will they know how to defend themselves, they will also feel safe, secure and calm within themselves with increased self-confidence and self-reliance.
The techniques that I teach are simple and easy to remember. After a few hours of training, it becomes an automated body reaction and muscle memory gets imbedded. The automatic freeze or flight response gets replace by a confident fight instinct that will save lives. In my program I focus on different ways of escaping from various holds and chokes while standing or on the ground and surviving a knife attack; all dangerous situations that unfortunately exist in the real world now. To celebrate their achievement, each child receives a self-defence certificate at the end of their training.

FAQ
Are you teaching children how to fight and be violent? Not at all. I teach children how to defend themselves when no other option is available. In this course, the main two ideas that each student must understand are that "avoiding conflict is a victory" and "not escalating the situation is also a victory." By learning self-defense techniques, students understand that it's possible to escape from most common dangerous situations on the street, and by understanding this, they significantly improve their overall self-confidence.
Isn't it dangerous to teach self-defense to middle or high school students? If you follow the safety rules as you would in any other physical education activity, you will be fine. While martial arts and self-defense may seem to have a higher risk of injury, the truth is that sports like soccer or any ball games have a much higher chance of injury, especially in middle or high school.
I don't have any experience. Can I teach this unit? Yes, you will be able to teach by using the video library that you can find in the course. However, I still recommend going through the techniques and videos you're about to introduce to the class and making sure you understand the concepts.
Do I need to buy additional equipment? If you decide to run a proper unit, you will need all the necessary equipment. Sometimes you can simply rent it from one of the local shops or martial art studios. However, some techniques only require mats and a partner.
How would you recommend running the lesson? If you have little to no experience in martial arts or any other form of fighting skills, I would recommend running the lesson/workshop like this: 1. Warm up - 3 minutes 2. Stretching - 5 minutes 3. Lesson introduction - explain what the students will learn in today's class. 4. Screen the technique drills and explanation video and start practicing. Don't forget to explain the safety rules, such as no excessive force or resistance during training. 5. Once the students understand the drills, encourage them to perform the whole movement or escape. 6. This part might take around 30 minutes. 7. To make it easier, screen a video of the technique so the students can see it while they practice. Discuss the importance of self-defense and how to avoid conflicts.
